How to change your background in Google Meet

To change your background in Google Meet, open open visual effects and pick an image, or click Add new to upload your own. Google Meet wants a 1920 x 1080 px image at 16:9 in JPG or PNG.

Save the background to your computer
Download any image here. Meet uploads from your local files, so it needs to exist on the machine you are calling from.
Open visual effects
On the green room screen before you join, click the sparkle icon on your self-preview. Already in the call? Click the three dots at the bottom, then Apply visual effects.
Upload your own
In the Backgrounds panel, click the + tile (Upload a background image) and pick your file. It appears in the grid and applies straight away.
Keep it for next time
Meet remembers uploaded backgrounds against your Google account, so an image you add on your laptop shows up again in later meetings on the same account.

Where it usually goes wrong

Custom background upload needs Chrome, Edge or the Meet mobile app. Firefox and Safari get blur only.
Google Workspace admins can restrict backgrounds for managed accounts. On a work account that is the first thing to check if the + tile is missing.
Effects are hardware-hungry in a browser. If the call starts stuttering when you apply a background, that is the cause — drop the effect before you drop the call quality.
On low-power devices Meet sometimes turns effects off by itself mid-call, and tells you it did.

Common questions

Why can I not upload a custom background in Google Meet?

Usually the browser. Custom uploads work in Chrome and Edge but not Firefox or Safari, where you only get blur and the stock set. On a work account, an admin policy is the other common reason.

What size background does Google Meet want?

Meet publishes no hard limit, but a 1920 x 1080 16:9 image matches the video frame and will not be cropped or upscaled. That is what everything on this site is.

Do Google Meet backgrounds sync across devices?

Uploaded backgrounds are tied to your Google account, so they generally reappear when you sign in elsewhere — though the mobile app and the web app do not always show the same set.
