Two things separate a convincing one from a bad one. Shelves are vertical high-contrast clutter, so a wall of spines directly behind your head is the worst case for the cutout — the good ones put the shelving to one side and leave a calmer wall in the middle. And depth matters: a flat, head-on photograph of a bookcase looks like a printed backdrop, while one with a little perspective and some falloff looks like a room you are sitting in.
