Picking one that works
The joke has to survive being a postage stamp. On a twelve-person call your tile is a couple of hundred pixels wide, so anything that depends on fine detail is simply gone. The ones that land read instantly at thumbnail size: one clear idea, big shapes, strong contrast.
The second thing is where your head goes. Every background effect cuts you out and pastes you into the middle of the frame, so whatever sits behind your head is hidden for the whole call. Put the punchline off to one side and it survives.
Whatever you choose, the setup is the same in every app: Teams, Zoom and Google Meet each hide the option in a different menu, and all three want the same 1920 x 1080 file.
